Did you know that one of Komik Ga Jelas most iconic characters, BUDI was created almost 6 years ago. We can’t deny that creating Budi was really challenging. It requires us to define the uniqueness of the character and provide an eye-catching character design. We also need to make the character relatable to our audience personality, and most importantly it should be connected with Komik Ga Jelas’s brand style.
We are aware that every creator has their own focus in building their most favorite character - it can be the physical look design, the accent, or even the interactions between each character. You may choose what you think is the most important element to your character.
Remember, as a creator you have the freedom to explore and be creative about what kind of comic character you want to create, and set the standard or expectation on how the character is perceived by the audience.
After years of observations in this industry, we recognize several common obstacles on creating the iconic comic character, such as provide the visual that is matched with the theme of the story, finding the uniqueness and interesting character, and building a connection with audiences.
Yea, even Budi has also been through a lot of revision hahahaha!
Jasmine Surkatty, Creator of Komik Ga Jelas, shared her struggle while making the character Budi to live. She explained that the most challenging part of creating Budi was to develop the character so that the readers could understand his perspective. To know more about Budi’s perspective she tried to think about Budi’s dreams, habits, and what kind of act that Budi will do in some circumstances.
NOTE : Creating backstory is the key. It will help us to create and explore the character even more and it also could be the bridge to create relationships with the audience point of view :)
Are you guys curious about the process on how Komik Ga Jelas Create the iconic BUDI? Sit back and relax, we’ll take you back to the day where Budi was about to be born~
Budi was created almost 6 years ago and it all starts from 0. Hahahaha JK! It all started from the creator's hobby where she likes to draw a generic stickman character that can suit in any situation. But as the time goes by, the backstory from Budi was created and it perfectly suits the Komik Ga Jelas stories and then ABRAKADABRA! Budi was born!
Budi was named after an Indonesian textbook called “Ini Budi”. This book was very popular with elementary kids in the 90s. Hahahaha!
So, to take you a little deeper in the character making journey, here is our route to develop Budi and Friends to be the characters loved by many (hmm, If Budi knew about it, he must be up in the air right now XP)
#1 Start From The Things Around You
For Komik Ga Jelas, exploring ideas around something that is familiar to everyday life is important. Therefore, we start by creating a simple framework based on things around. Fun facts! All of the exploration and experiment on Komik Gajels’s character always, we repeat, ALWAYS start from things that we found in our daily lives.
hmmmm, why do we start from things that we found in our daily lives? because it helps us in creating characters that are close to the audience and it may help us create relatable yet unique characters!
#2 Explore The Goals for Your Character!
Creating character backstory, goals, and objectives are the next focus. A small research wont hurt! You could search it from your audience behavior, or even from people around you. Oh and Building a relationship between each character also helps us to know more about the character personality and to know what kind of visual illustration suits them! All of those things really help us in making the visuals and liven up each and every character.
In order to strengthen Budi’s story background, Jasmine created Susi (The love of Budi’s Life HAHAHA) to help build up his character even more! From most of Komik Ga Jelas’s stories, you will see Budi’s character development from time to time and see how the character relates to most guys in the urban era (Galau, Gombal, Ga jelas). So that the audience was very related to the story of Budi. This case really brings more interest in the audience point of view ;) Oh by the way, Sadly, Budi’s love for Susi was unrequited :(
#3 Create The Visual Characters!
Question of the day is : You won't your character to be flat, do you??
So, to help you all you should do is to create a unique physical characteristic and put small attractive props to brighten up your character! These two things could help to liven up the characters and increase the audience interest in your characters!
These are the elements that we create on purpose to give an accent to our character. You can put it in every part of your character. For example, Budi has a BIG mouth and BIG eyes. These two unique features help create Budi’s physical characteristics identity. And it really creates the top of mind on the readers!
Well as we said before, small things really help you to hype up the character. You can put some props that match the character personality and it really does help! For the new collaboration Komik Ga Jelas “Neon Lights”, Budi wore a funky yellow jacket that gave him a masculine vibe!
Last but not least, DON'T BE AFRAID TO EXPLORE AND JUST HAVE FUN ON CREATING CHARACTER!
Lastly, as a reminder for all of us, please don’t be afraid to explore your imaginations! Don’t worry about your scratching, because creating a unique character takes time. It’s fine, you’ll get there! PS: don’t stop exploring your character and please have fun! Do some upgrading to your character, for example, for several years, Budi NEVER, I repeat NEVER wear clothes but we try to do a little experiment and VOILAAA look at Budi’s new outfit! It's unique right?
So, what are you waiting for? go get your pencil and LET'S START SCRATCHINGGGGGG!!
