Comedy Comic Strips in The Making: How Ga Jelas Effectively Deliver Jokes

You can easily find comedy comic strips on social media, but do you ever wonder how the creators can make the audience laugh at the humour that is setted up in a very limited space? Well, as you are all aware, the comic strips usually have four panels only. Here, we’ll explore how Ga Jelas effectively deliver jokes in our comics.

People love comic strips for its simplicity. Thus, from the creator's perspective, this can be the main challenge. The creators need to focus on one topic only in every piece of comic strips. The challenge arises as creators need to find the right humour and punchlines within those four panels.

Hmmmmm, any idea what topic you want to deliver?

Wise man said that experience is the best teacher, and Ga Jelas experiences has taught us that creating a comedy comic needs to at least have simple, and yet effectively funny ideas; unpredicted jokes, yet remain relatable to the readers; on point character expressions, and a catchy comical dialog.

Here's some of KGJ's most famous comic strips XD Have you seen it?

Roses are red, violets are blue; creating a comics, here’s the steps you need to do:

5 steps you should do to create your comic strips~

#1 Dig and Seek Your Humour Inspiration

We, at Ga Jelas, train our brain to be able to have smooth and fresh ideas with three approaches: observe, research, and discuss.

Sometimes, inspiration comes from the surrounding, even when we are not trying to find any. Write down your ideas as soon as it hits your mind to avoid any chance it becomes faded away. Observe and try to see usual things in different perspectives. Keep your radar on!

#FunFacts of The Day - Budi and Friends stories were inspired by things that happened in our daily lives. The creators build a GIGANTIC story bank just to store the ideas XOXO

You can see how most of KGJ stories come from daily activities~

#2 Visualize Your Ideas

Moving to the next step, you would need to visualize your ideas, so let’s SCRATCH SCRATCH SCRATCHHH! Start creating the outline of your comic strip and draw the character expression that might fit to the story!

#3 Finalize Your Drawing

In this step, let’s fix up your drawing to make it look even more eye-pleasing. TADAAA! Your comic will spark beautifully after you’re done with the lineart.

It's coloring and editing timee! BTW, this is what Budi do in meantime XD

#4 Make it Standout with the Color

To brighten and liven up your comics, you can start coloring the panels. BUT you can skip this step if you prefer your comics to be black and white. Don’t worry, monochrome has the beauty side too.

#5 Give the Final touch

Give a little touch up (not make up okay) and finalization to your drawing AND WE’RE DONE! Your comics are ready to be posted~ PS. Don’t be over excited and accidentally delete the file, export it first okay! Hahahaha.

NOTES : Finding ideas and choosing the story setup is the most important process. Try to pay attention to these two points, because it will determine which part of humour you should focus on.

How our creative team produce Ga Jelas weekly comics

While it can be a bumpy road, developing humor for comics strips is still interesting anyway. To help you pouring the jokes in your comics, please analyze these points:

  • The dialogues, which have to express the character personality and can be linked to the character background story.

  • Story set ups, where you build the scene, irony, and context that help you in bringing the comedy in your comic. Define the right story set up to create hilarious moments and dialogues.

  • The Jokes, how you lead the reader to find your comical ideas in fresh perspectives.

  • Last but not least is the Visual GAG, how you draw the character expression that makes your comics reach the climax or punchline.

Well, after all that you’ve done, you may still find that your comic is not that funny a.k.a garing. Please don’t lose your courage, we can always learn from our mistakes right? Always try to evaluate your comics and the process of making it. See which step you find troubled the most: is it the setup, dialogue, or the character expression? or maybe your jokes just don’t match with the audience's profiles. If it’s the case, move on and find a strategy to reach the right audience who will celebrate your jokes! Good luck <3
